We are getting back into the swing of things, but there hasn’t really been anything interesting to report until this week.
Unfortunately we are actually spending a lot of time trying to work through Caitlyn’s fear of failure. If she stumbles on any of her subjects she throws up a huge wall and is afraid to try any further. This is happening in math, reading, everywhere…other than that school is moving along nicely.
Back to the good stuff. This week we went on two great field trips. The first was her first ever official “homeschool group” field trip. We were able to go to Prattville Fire Station #3 where we watched a video for fire safety month, toured the station, the kids walked through a fire truck and ambulance, and talked to the fire fighters. I am still hearing about being “rabbit ready” or having two ways out of your home.
This was our tour group:
The next day we were able to go on another field trip with Mimi. How great is it that Caitlyn can go see a play with me and my mom, have a fantastic day, and it’s all in a day of school? We drove up to Birmingham, experienced parallel parking, Caitlyn got to feed a parking meter for the first time, we had lunch, and found the Children’s Theater with time to spare.
Caitlyn was really excited to see Trumpet of the Swan, as we recently, finally, finished the book. I knew there was going to be an orchestra, but I thought it was an accompaniment. It ended up being almost more music with dramatic reading, and some questionable drawings projected above the orchestra. I really enjoyed it, but it wasn’t at all what I expected. Caitlyn lost interest, and I think the volume of the music was overwhelming for her. I was glad she already knew the story especially with the way it was presented. All in all it was a good experience, but I’m hoping the next play will go a little smoother.
